What to Do If It Rains on Your Wedding Day

Backup Plans for Outdoor Ceremonies in & Around Rochester, NY

Let’s be real: we Rochesterians plan weddings in a city where it can be 70° and sunny at 2pm and hailing just fifteen minutes later.

If you’re dreaming of saying “I do” at Highland Park, on the shore of Lake Ontario, or under the trees at Mendon Ponds Park, you need a Plan B that feels just as magical as Plan A.

After being involved with many ceremonies, here’s my no-panic guide to rainout plans that actually work.

1. First: Reframe the “Rain Plan” to a “Weather Plan”

Rain isn’t the only curveball here. We get surprise wind off the lake, 90° humidity in July, and the sneaky 40° cold snap in September. Your back up plan should cover rain, wind, and extreme temps.

ROC Tip: If your date is April, May, or October, assume 50/50 odds the weather is going to cause you some sort of stress. June-Sept is safer, but Rochester weather always keeps us humble.

2. The 3 Types of Backup Plans That Work in the ROC

A. The On-Site Plan B: Same Venue, Different Spot

Best for: Venues similar to Glendoveers, Casa Larga, or barn venues with indoor space. Ask your venue these questions NOW, not the week of:

• What’s the indoor capacity vs. outdoor guest count?

• Who decides when we move — you or us? At what time?

• Is there a cost to flip the space? Some venues charge a “rain flip fee” for staff.

Local pro move: If you’re at Highland Bowl, the Lamberton Conservatory could be your gorgeous indoor pivot, though the space is limited. At Webster Park, the White House pavilion can be a covered backup if you rent it. (It is VERY popular rent that ASAP)

B. The Tent Plan: Bring Your Own Shelter

Best for: Backyard weddings, parks like Mendon Ponds, or vineyards

• Reserve, don’t gamble: Tent companies in Rochester book out 6-12 months ahead for summer Saturdays. Put a tent on hold with a local business and confirm how much notice they need to cancel. Some places allow 48-72 hrs before, to cancel with minimal fee.

• Sidewalls are non-negotiable: Lake Ontario wind + rain = sideways rain. Clear sidewalls keep the view and keep your guests dry.

• Flooring: Grass will become mushy and muddy fast. Ask about subflooring if your budget allows. At minimum, have a plan for muddy heels.

C. The Full Venue Pivot: Separate Indoor Location

Best for: Public parks with no shelter, or if you love a Plan B as much as Plan A

Ideas couples have loved:

• If your plan A is to get married in a park and you are having your reception elsewhere many ROC venues will let you use the reception space for the ceremony if weather flips. Ask if it’s included, and again make sure to ask how far in advance the venue needs to be notified so they can flip the space.

3. The Timeline: When to Make the Call

This is where couples stress most. Here’s what actually works in Rochester:

Timeframe	What to Do
Booking your vendors	Confirm “rain plan clauses” with photographer, musicians, rentals. Confirm with your reception & ceremony site options for weather events.
1 week out	CHECK THE FUTURE CAST! Rochester forecasts change daily — so if it looks questionable, don’t panic yet.
48 hours out	Check updated forecasts. Loop in your coordinator + officiant on how you are feeling about the forecast and the ceremony plan.
Morning-of	If radar shows >60% chance of rain during ceremony time, activate your Plan B. Drizzle? Maybe think about moving it. Thunderstorms? Definitely move.
2 hours before (if site allows)	Final call. Guests are getting ready. Don’t wait until they’re in the car.

ROC Tip: Designate one person to make the call if it rains on your wedding day — a planner, venue coordinator, or your MOH. Not you. You should be relaxed and sipping champagne.

4. How to Make the Backup  Plan Feel Intentional, Not Like a Consolation Prize

• Decorate Plan B too: If you rented a floral arch, make sure it can move to your new space. Same with your aisle petals, candles, signage. Your photos will still look curated.

• Embrace it in photos: Some of my favorite photos I have seen are of the bride and groom sharing a special moment or kiss under clear umbrellas. You can buy 10-15 clear umbrellas on Amazon. They photograph beautifully. Officiant note* I keep a few handy in my car just in case! 

• Tell your guests upfront: Add a line to your website: “Ceremony will be outdoors at Highland Park, weather permitting. Our indoor backup is Lamberton Conservatory.” Guests in heels will thank you.

5. Your Weather Plan Checklist — Save This

• Venue’s indoor capacity confirmed

• Tent on hold + cancellation deadline on calendar

• Photographer’s plan confirmed in writing

• Clear umbrellas purchased for couple + wedding party

• Towels + paper towels in the getting-ready suite

• “Who makes the call” person designated

• Wording for guests if location changes — text, wedding website alert, or ushers
